Abstract
Background: The aim of study was to evaluate clinical outcomes according to patient controlled analgesia with or without nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on spinal fusion.

Methods: From 2008 to 2010, 30 patients got single or two segmental decompression and posterolateral fusion. Group 1 was taking postoperative pain control by patient controlled analgesia with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and Group 2 was not taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. We examined visual analog scale for degree of the pain and judged a final bone fusion by radiographic evaluation, also researched the complications.

Results: The incidence of incomplete union or nonunion was higher in group 1 but no significantly different. The complication, the common side-effect of used opioid like nausea, respiratory depression and vomiting, rates also is not significantly different.

Conclusions: We couldn¡¯t find out the difference about a pain and a complication by using patient controlled analgesia with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in two comparing groups. However, using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs via patient controlled analgesia after surgery, may inhibit spinal fusion. We have to consider using patient controlled analgesia with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs after spinal fusion and research more case control study.
